Starting Dec. 1, owners of eligible properties can apply for rural Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) permits through Deschutes County Community Development. Not all properties will be eligible for ADUs. Based on state and local ordinances, rural ADUs are subject to additional development standards compared to typical residential projects. See if your property qualifies<\/a><\/strong> for ADU building at your location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Note from ADU builder, Austin Willis<\/em>: Here is a link to Deschutes County\u2019s latest update on progress toward allowing ADU\u2019s on rural properties<\/strong>. The biggest thing I see (that I was earlier unaware of) is that property owners will be allowed in to build an ADU in the \u201cmulti-use agricultural zone\u201d (MUA). I knew ADUs would be allowed in the rural residential zone, but this is new and exciting information to me. and to any property owner who wants an ADU in the MUA zone. The aim<\/a> is to reduce interest paid by the borrower, help ease the affordable housing crunch, and “allow homeowners to take advantage of recent state changes that have encouraged the construction of ADUs.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n A Wall Street Journal article says they may even allow you to convert your garage into a new rental opportunity<\/a>. A real estate agent in San Diego converted a detached one-car garage into a $2,000 per month source of income. Yes, it will take time for the new rental property reach the breakeven point … but a savvy accountant can potentially show you how to leverage tax laws to your favor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n ADU legislation passed includes devoting one million dollars on a pilot program that will build ADUs for homeowners who qualify and allowing the construction of ADUs in rural residential zones within the state.
